Smederevska jesen (Smederevo’s Autumn)

As one of the oldest manifestations in Serbia, Smederevo’s Autumn has become a brand of the city of Smederevo. Every September, a rich program of cultural and artistic events is offered for the glory of grapes, wine and glorious times of Đurađ’s Despotate, together with ceremonial parade of medieval knights, the most beautiful girls of Smederevo, cheerful children and carneval groups.

The beginnings and foundations of this manifestation, established in order to support the City identity and its development, were related to the specialized fruit exhibitions at end of the 19th century, and that significantly influenced building up prestige of this area in terms of fruit and wine-growing region, well internationally respected as well.

Today, Smederevo’s Autumn expresses and affirms the distinctive features of the city – beside fruit and vineyard products. Welcomed by cornucopia of activities, visitors can experience authentic rural, ethno motives at the agricultural exhibition “Seoska dvorista“ (Rural Yards), visit promotion of economic potentials, cultural programs, workshops, performances, concerts and sports competitions.

Thousands of visitors gather at the main City square, in the Wine Town, on the Danube’s quay and in the Fortress throughout the manifestation days. Smederevo, the former Serbian capital, always open, shows them its warm heart year after year.

Nušićevi dani (The Days of Nušić)

The theater festival ‘Nušićevi dani’ was initiated in 1984, with the aim to popularize the work of Branislav Nušić, the most prominent Serbian comedy writer, who spent a part of his childhood and youth in Smederevo.

This prestigious festival summons a number of theatrical performances. In addition, there are scientific conferences, meetings, exhibitions, children’s programs and presentations of books dedicated to Nušić. Also, Life Achievement Award is presented to the selected actor – comedian.


Every April, the admirers of the theater art from Smederevo and other places have an opportunity to meet the Nušić’s characters, to laugh good-naturedly at their weaknesses, and to pay respect to the writer who knew our mentality so well, who proved to be our contemporary at all times.

Teatar u Tvrđavi (The Fortress Theater Festival)

The Fortress Theater Festival is ambiental and is held in the summer period in the Fortress Inner City (Mali grad). The theater performances are of top quality, distinguished theater actors and actresses from Serbia and beyond gather here.

Records of attendance get broken, and the enchanting space of the medieval city of Despot Đurađ enhances the wondrous experience and contributes to the magic of this festival which strengthens the cultural identity of Smederevo year by year.

„Danube Film Fest“

The film festival of countries along the Danube River that is held every year at four locations in the city: Small Town of Smederevo Fortress, Centre for Culture Smederevo, Pier (Pristan ship) and at Karađorđe’s Mulberry tree.

The films compete for the main prize „Danube ship“.

The Film Globe, a program selection held in the Centre for Culture Smederevo, screens some of the best films from the world festivals.

Best from Europe films are shown at the Pristan ship whereas the Children’s program with animated films dubbed into Serbian is screened at Karađorđe’s Mulberry Tree.

„Knights and Legends“ Festival

During this festival, visitors have the opportunity to feel the spirit of the Middle Ages through knight combat process, a mediaeval bazaar and a lot of diverse workshops.

Mediaeval music, sounds of a hammer striking the anvil, the sound of a horn announcing the battle in the ring placed in the centre of the Small town just add to this experience.

Armours and weaponry of the time are displayed in mediaeval tents and on counters.Visitors may try themselves at archery, calligraphy, making stained glass and many other activities.

Knight combats in a ring take place every full hour.

As a part of the festival, a mediaeval bazaar is held in the Small Town where visitors can buy interesting products from mediaeval times.

„Fortress of Music“ Festival

For three festival rights, the Small Town of Smederevo Fortress, that captivates with its distinct ambient features and stands out for its outstanding acoustic properties ideal for organising music events, hosts the audience that can enjoy the concerts holding to the artistic qualities and investigative approach to music as a field of never-ending inspiration.

Smederevska pesnička jesen (Smederevo’s Poet Autumn)

International Poet Festival was launched in Smederevo in 1970. Beside the home city writers, reputable Serbian and foreign authors, the less famous writers from all meridians also affirm their works at this poetry fair of high artistic value. The festival has had over 150,000 visitors so far.
