The Danube

The longest European river Danube makes the northern border of the Smederevo territory included in the Danube River Basin. It flows by the Smederevo riverbank, 45-kilometer long, riverbed between 800 and 1300 meters wide. Near the Fortress of Smederevo, the Danube forks into three branches by the river islands, big and small ada (river island), the one on the right being the widest and the deepest. When the water level is high and the islands and their parts get drowned, the Danube may reach a width of over 2 kilometers.

In the last few years Jugovo picnic area may boast of waterpark with amenities for rest and recreation – a restaurant, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and children’s playground.

Did you know?

Upon his return from Italy in 1806, it was here that Dositej Obradović stepped on the ground of free Serbia. These are his words about Jugovo that were noted down: ‘Eh, my brethren! How short my whole life seems to me until I saw the landscapes of Smederevo! It is here that one can see that even the Turks do not lack good taste. They have remained with the Serbs to be given orders by them, although it was contrary until recently, only not to give up on this beauty…’.

Grove of the Village of Šalinac

This natural monument spreads over the surface of 19 hectares in the plain of the Godomin Field and is created by the floods of the river Velika Morava (Great Morava), in the area of its confluence and the Danube. It is around ten kilometers away from Smederevo, and is surrounded by the settlement of Šalinac and Kulič.

The Grove of Šalinac is the wooded area where you can see about 200 autochthonous marsh oak trees (Quercus robur). The field ash trees that used to grow here cannot be found here anymore. This natural property hosts 19 bird species, out of which white stork (Ciconia Ciconia), barn swallow (Hirundo rustic) and old world oriole (Oriolidae) are protected as a natural rarity.

As an ecosystem, this natural property is a real rarity not only in Serbia but also in the wider region of the Balkan Peninsula.
