Main City Square

Main City Square

The place which represents a dominant component of modern Smederevo was created in the first half of the 19th century after the Second Serbian Uprising, at the Great Market site, on the junction of Serbian and Turkish part of the town.

The Church of Saint George dominates the triangular square which also hosts the Monument to the Soldiers of the First World War, the building of the former Regional Prefecture, the building of the former Municipal Hall, and the City Gallery of Modern Art, the structures that represent the wealthy historical and cultural heritage of the City revealing the identity of the old Smederevo.

Another amenity of the square is a fountain, a favorite meeting place of the young and the old.
